LUMS National Outreach Programme (NOP): A Two-Year Path to a Fully Funded Degree

For a student from a low-income family with strong Matric results, LUMS can feel like a different world — excellent, but financially out of reach. The National Outreach Programme, universally known as NOP, exists precisely for that gap. It is not a shortcut into LUMS, and it is not a separate, easier admission track. It is a long, structured path: apply early, spend two weeks being tested at LUMS, earn admission on the same merit standards as everyone else, and only then qualify for full financial assistance.

That honesty matters, because the most common disappointment around NOP comes from misunderstanding the order of events. The coaching session does not guarantee admission. Admission does not automatically mean a scholarship. The scholarship follows admission plus a financial-need assessment. Students who understand that sequence plan better and worry less.

This guide is independent. LUMS sets the current deadlines, test requirements, and programme details, so verify them on the official NOP pages before applying.

Who NOP is for

NOP is a need-based programme for academically strong students from across Pakistan. LUMS states two eligibility conditions plainly on its official NOP pages:

  • At least 80% marks in Matriculation, or equivalent grades in O-Levels.
  • Demonstrated financial need — a genuine inability to afford LUMS fees, assessed by a dedicated review committee.

There is no fixed annual intake and no provincial or city quota: LUMS states that all candidates who meet the eligibility requirements and qualify for admission are considered, regardless of geography. Selection rests on academic merit and demonstrated need, not on where you live or which school you attended. Students apply for the Summer Coaching Session while they are in the first year of Intermediate or A-Levels — roughly two years before they would start an undergraduate degree at LUMS.

The four stages, in order

Stage 1: Apply for the Summer Coaching Session

Eligible first-year Intermediate or A-Level students submit an online application for the Summer Coaching Session (SCS) through the NOP application portal. Shortlisting is based on academic performance and financial need. LUMS also runs outreach visits to schools and colleges across Pakistan, so a student in a small town is as entitled to apply as a student in Lahore — but the application itself must still be submitted online, on time, with complete information.

Stage 2: Two weeks at LUMS

Shortlisted candidates are invited to a two-week Summer Coaching Session at LUMS during the summer holidays. The session combines intensive academic preparation with assessments designed to test readiness for LUMS-level study, and it gives students a real taste of university life. LUMS covers all expenses of the session except travel costs. Performance during the session, not attendance alone, decides who proceeds to the admissions stage.

Stage 3: Admission on the same merit standard

Successful coaching-session candidates apply for undergraduate admission through the regular LUMS admissions process and take the required admission test. LUMS covers the one-time admission application processing fee and test registration fee for qualifying NOP candidates. Critically, NOP candidates face the same rigorous academic admission criteria as regular applicants — there is no lowered merit bar. Admission is awarded on merit; the scholarship is a separate, need-based decision that follows it.

Stage 4: Financial-need assessment and the scholarship

Candidates who secure admission on merit and meet the financial-need assessment criteria are eligible to receive a fully funded NOP scholarship. According to LUMS, the award covers tuition fees and may include hostel accommodation, a book allowance, and a living allowance for students whose assessed need exceeds 100% of tuition. Financial need is reassessed annually throughout the student’s undergraduate studies, so keeping the university informed of any major change in family circumstances matters.

What the current pipeline looks like

LUMS publishes a pipeline for each cycle. For the 2027–28 pipeline shown on the official NOP page at the time of writing, the Summer Coaching Session application deadline falls in February 2027, with document submission a few days later, selection for the coaching session in June, the session itself in July and August, selection for the undergraduate application stage in September and October, and the undergraduate admission application window in January to February 2028, with classes starting in September 2028. That two-year arc is why timing matters so much: a student who discovers NOP in second-year Intermediate has usually missed the window for their cohort.

Do not treat those pipeline dates as fixed for every year. LUMS updates the schedule annually, and admission test requirements are also updated each year. Check the official NOP page for the cycle that matches your year of Intermediate.

Preparing a strong NOP application

NOP rewards evidence, not essays full of adjectives. A few practical points:

  • Keep your Matric result ready and accurate. The 80% threshold is a hard filter, so enter marks exactly as they appear on your result — rounding up a 79.6% is not a strategy.
  • Be honest and complete about family finances. The need assessment is run by a review committee, and need is reassessed annually. An inflated or understated picture helps no one and can unravel later.
  • Treat the coaching session as an assessment, not a summer camp. Revise core concepts from Matric and first-year Intermediate before you arrive, and take the session’s tests seriously — they determine progression.
  • Start thinking about the admission test early. The test you need depends on your chosen undergraduate programme and the year’s requirements, so check the LUMS admissions pages rather than relying on what last year’s candidates took.
  • Do not pay anyone for NOP placement. There is no application fee for the coaching session application described by LUMS, and no intermediary can guarantee shortlisting or admission.

What NOP does not do

It does not reserve seats by province or city. It does not lower LUMS admission standards for NOP candidates. It does not fund students who are admitted but do not meet the financial-need criteria. And it does not replace the undergraduate admission application — coaching-session success still requires a full, separate admission application in the admissions cycle. Students who keep those boundaries clear are far less likely to feel misled by the process.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for NOP in second-year Intermediate?

The coaching-session application is designed for students in the first year of Intermediate or A-Levels. If you are already in second year, check the official NOP page for your cohort — the standard route will usually have closed for you, and you would instead apply through regular LUMS admissions and financial aid.

Is 80% in Matric the only academic requirement?

It is the stated threshold for applying, but admission itself depends on the full LUMS undergraduate criteria, including the admission test and your Intermediate performance. Meeting 80% gets you into consideration; it does not guarantee a place.

Does attending the coaching session guarantee admission or a scholarship?

No. LUMS is explicit that progression depends on performance during the session and on meeting the programme’s selection requirements, and that admission is awarded on merit, with the scholarship decided by financial-need assessment afterwards.

What does the scholarship cover?

Tuition fees, and for students whose assessed need exceeds 100% of tuition, it may also include hostel accommodation, a book allowance, and a living allowance. LUMS also covers coaching-session expenses except travel, and qualifying candidates’ admission and test registration fees.

Where do I apply?

Apply for the Summer Coaching Session through the official NOP application portal, and check the current cycle’s dates and requirements on the official NOP pages at nop.lums.edu.pk before submitting.
